Color Management

Overview

Correct color management is critical for physically accurate PBR rendering. Texture Pipeline Studio automatically assigns the correct color space for each supported map type when connecting textures to the shader.

Supported Maps

The add-on recognizes and automatically handles the following map types:

  • Base Color — sRGB color space for perceptual color data
  • Normal — Non-Color, connected via a Normal Map node
  • Roughness — Non-Color scalar data
  • Metallic — Non-Color scalar mask
  • Height / Displacement — Non-Color linear data
  • Opacity / Alpha — Non-Color, connected to the Alpha input

Color Space Auto-Detection

The add-on detects the correct color space based on naming patterns:

  • sRGB — Assigned to files matching BaseColor, Albedo, Diffuse, Color keywords
  • Non-Color — Assigned to files matching Normal, Roughness, Metallic, Height, Opacity keywords
Note: Auto-detection follows best-effort heuristics. Always verify color space assignments, especially for non-standard naming.

sRGB vs Non-Color Reference

Map Type Color Space Reason
Base Color / AlbedosRGBPerceptual color data viewed on screen
NormalNon-ColorDirectional data, no gamma correction
RoughnessNon-ColorScalar data, linear interpretation
MetallicNon-ColorScalar mask, no perceptual encoding
Height / DisplacementNon-ColorLinear scalar data
Opacity / AlphaNon-ColorTransparency mask
