Naming Conventions

Overview

Consistent naming conventions are essential for Texture Pipeline Studio to automatically detect and assign texture maps. The add-on recognizes multiple common naming patterns for each map type, supporting exports from Substance Painter, Materialize, and other PBR authoring tools.

Supported Map Type Keywords

The add-on detects map types by scanning filenames for the following keywords:

Base Color: BaseColor, Albedo, Diffuse, Color
Normal: Normal, NormalGL, NormalDX, NRM
Roughness: Roughness, Rough
Metallic: Metallic, Metalness, Metal
Height: Height, Disp, Displacement
Opacity: Opacity, Alpha

Naming for Resolution Switching

To enable resolution switching, filenames must be identical across all resolution folders. The map type keyword is used to identify which file connects to which shader input:

8K/Wood/Wood_BaseColor.png
4K/Wood/Wood_BaseColor.png
2K/Wood/Wood_BaseColor.png
1K/Wood/Wood_BaseColor.png

Substance Painter Compatibility

Texture Pipeline Studio supports exports from Substance Painter as long as filenames follow the recognized naming conventions. Configure your Substance Painter export template to use one of the supported keywords (e.g., $mesh_BaseColor, $mesh_Normal).

Best Practices

  • Choose one naming convention and stick with it across all texture libraries.
  • Use the same base name for all maps of a material (e.g., Wood_BaseColor, Wood_Normal, Wood_Roughness).
  • Avoid special characters or spaces in filenames for cross-platform compatibility.
  • Use underscores as separators for readability.
